Gijón promotes self-protection program for surfers on October 9 and 10

On October 5, 2026, the Gijón City Council announced a new initiative to promote self-protection for surfers, organized by the Department of Citizen Security and the Fire Prevention, Extinction, and Rescue Service.

Workshop Details

The workshops will take place on Friday, October 9, from 4 PM to 8 PM, and Saturday, October 10, from 10 AM to 2 PM, at Staircase 9 of San Lorenzo Beach. These practical training sessions will be led by Jonan Etxebarria, a specialist in rescue operations and author of 'Lifeguarding for Surfers', along with instructors from the Professional Institute of Security and Emergencies (IPSE).

Participation is limited to 20 individuals per workshop, with registration open from today until October 6 at the Central Rescue Station, operating from 11 AM to 5 PM.

Public Talk on Surf Safety

Additionally, on October 10 at 5 PM, a public talk titled 'Surf, Safety, and Beach' will be presented by Jonan Etxebarria. This event is open to the general public and aims to promote marine culture, accident prevention, and safe enjoyment of Gijón's beaches. Admission is free until capacity is reached (150 seats) and will be held at the CMI de La Arena.

It is important to note that the talk does not constitute a professional training course nor does it qualify attendees for rescue operations; it is purely educational and focused on promoting safe practices.
