Madrid's skies take centre stage in sixth photography competition

The city council has announced the winners of the sixth photography competition organised by the Museum of History of Madrid, aimed at preserving the city's memory through photographic art. This year's theme, 'From Madrid to the sky', in collaboration with the Madrid Planetarium, encouraged participants to view the city from a fresh perspective, connecting urban heritage with the sky above.

Over 1,200 images were submitted to the competition, with Antonio Farto Casado taking first prize for his photograph titled The guardian of the sky. José Luis Morcillo Amo received the second prize for Sunset in Madrid, while Marcelino Díaz Zabala was awarded third place for Chariots in the sky of Madrid.

The theme was inspired by the 40th anniversary of the Planetarium and the excitement surrounding the total solar eclipse visible in August across the peninsula. As a result, the sky features prominently in all the awarded photographs, interacting with the urban landscape and daily life of the city.

This competition invites viewers to discover Madrid from a different angle, highlighting its heritage, light, and the sky through photography. The winning works will be on display free of charge until 28 February in the Golden Courtyard of the Museum of History of Madrid, alongside 37 other finalist photographs. The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 20:00 hours.
