Susana Sánchez opens ‘women who played hide and seek’ exhibition at IES Coloma

The Deputy Mayor for Equality and Diversity, Susana Sánchez, inaugurated the educational exhibition ‘Women who played hide and seek: Writers, politicians, and thinkers’ today at IES Coloma. This innovative activity is part of the municipal educational initiative Jerez Educa.

The event was attended by the school's director, Moisés García Fresno, the Equality Coordinator, Carmen Espejo, along with faculty and students, and served to symbolically commemorate the Day of Women Writers, a date dedicated to celebrating female contributions to literature.

The exhibition is displayed in a gallery within the school, where students participated this morning by performing musical pieces and reciting poems from some of the authors featured in the educational showcase.

This exhibition is based on the illustrated book ‘Women who played hide and seek’, written by Raquel Díez, a teacher and writer from Jerez, and illustrated by Tamara Durán. In collaboration with the authors and Algar Editorial, and with a preface by Elisa Constanza, the Equality and Diversity Delegation has adapted this work into an exhibition format, editing 42 biographies of women for distribution in educational centres.

Each biography highlights the stories of women such as Virginia Woolf, Ada Byron, María Moliner, Frida Kahlo, Clara Campoamor, and María Zambrano, among many others, revealing their histories and achievements. The exhibition aims to illuminate the forgotten and silenced voices of women, showcasing an alternative history woven by women even from the shadows of an imposed ‘game’ they could not choose.

The educational proposal from this book received the Rosa Regás Award from the Junta de Andalucía for coeducational materials in its 17th edition (2023). Given the extensive number of biographies included in this project to recover women's memory, it has been divided into three exhibitions for loan to centres: Women in Art, Women Writers, and Women in Science.

As a complement to the activity, each centre that requests the exhibition will receive a copy of the book ‘Women who played hide and seek’, published by Algar Editorial, to include in the Violet Corners of their libraries.
