On October 8, 2026, the mayor of Vigo announced the initiation of a contract aimed at promoting tourism in the city through direct air connections. The objective is to attract more visitors by strengthening Vigo's position in key markets, with planned flights to two national destinations—Sevilla and Alicante—and two European destinations—London and Paris.
During a press conference, the mayor detailed the launch of the procedure for contracting the tourism promotion service for the brand “Vigo.” This initiative aims to enhance air connectivity from the city’s airport to both national and international airports, thereby boosting travel, reducing seasonal demand fluctuations, and diversifying the tourism offer.
“We want to attract more visitors and promote the use of the airport,” the mayor stated, emphasizing that this project will enhance the city’s positioning in stable air connectivity markets. The municipal government has conducted months of studies, considering reports from AENA (the Spanish airport authority), the Vigo Convention Bureau, and the Galician Air Connectivity Working Group to identify the most relevant destinations for the city.
Based on potential demand and the travel patterns of Vigo's business and tourism sectors, the proposed direct flights include two national routes—Vigo-Alicante and Vigo-Sevilla—and two international routes—Vigo-London and Vigo-Paris.
The mayor highlighted that tourism, business, trade fairs, and the economy are vital activities for the city, influencing all economic sectors. Therefore, air transport and communications are essential for enhancing economic competitiveness, making it crucial to incorporate them into tourism promotion and marketing plans.
“Through advertising with airlines, we support the Vigo brand. We want to enhance Vigo's presence in Spain and strengthen our connections with two major European capitals,” the mayor concluded.
