Vigo City Council renews request to Xunta for use of treated wastewater for street cleaning

On October 6, 2026, the mayor of Vigo criticized the lack of response from Augas de Galicia to a request that the Vigo government has been making for five years. This request aims to utilize treated wastewater for street cleaning, an initiative that could help maintain cleanliness in the city during a drought pre-alert situation.

During a press conference on Tuesday, the mayor explained that the City Council sent another letter to Augas de Galicia, once again asking for permission to use regenerated water from the wastewater treatment plant for street cleaning, similar to practices in other cities. “The water that comes from the treatment plant is very clean and can be used for street washing,” he stated, emphasizing that the municipal government has been advocating for this measure for five years without receiving a response from the Xunta.

“We need to continue saving water, but we can also keep our streets clean,” said Caballero, noting that the Eiras reservoir is currently at 47% capacity, compared to 54% at the same time last year and 77% two years ago. “But the Xunta de Galicia does not want to support the city,” he insisted.
