On October 10, 2026, the Sports Councillor, Francisco Villaescusa, praised the organizational success and participation levels of the Sub-16 Athletics Championship by clubs, both male and female, taking place today at the athletics tracks of the University of Castilla-La Mancha. This event features some of the most prominent clubs in the national athletics scene.
During his visit to the facilities, Villaescusa highlighted the capability of the Municipal Sports Institute (IMD) to organize high-level competitions, stating that this championship “reaffirms that Albacete is one of the major sports venues in our country and a city prepared to host national events.”
He expressed gratitude for the collaboration of the Albacete-Diputación Athletics Club, led by its president, José Manuel Cambronero, as well as the trust placed in Albacete by the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation to host such a competition.
Villaescusa noted that the championship is also a result of improvements made by the City Council to the athletics tracks, which now provide suitable facilities for high-level events. He emphasized that the competition has attracted over 1,000 people to the city, including athletes, judges, coaches, federation delegates, and family members, creating significant social and sports activity over the weekend.
The councillor pointed out that events like this help project the 'Brand Albacete' beyond its borders, stimulate economic activity, and attract visitors, while also consolidating the city's image as a sports destination. He assured that the City Council will continue to work to ensure Albacete's presence on the national sports calendar, supporting the hosting of major competitions and improving municipal facilities to provide the best conditions for athletes, organizers, and the public.
With this championship, Villaescusa stated that “Albacete once again demonstrates its capacity to host major sports events and its commitment to promoting athletics and sports among the youth.”
