On 18 October, the Memorial Mariano Rivas Half Marathon was held, a key event for athletics enthusiasts that featured several races: a 21-kilometre half marathon, a more accessible 10-kilometre race, and a 6-kilometre solidarity run for multiple sclerosis. Despite challenging weather conditions, around 400 runners participated, coming from both Alcázar de San Juan and other areas in the region.
The event was officially started by Javier Ortega, the local councillor, alongside Luis García Morato, head of Youth and Sports for the Junta de Castilla-La Mancha, and Puri Ropero, president of the Club Maratón Altomira and organiser of the event. Although the day began grey, it ultimately did not rain, and the competition unfolded without any significant incidents, thanks in part to the efforts of between 90 and 100 volunteers who managed water stations and crossing points.
Special recognition was given to the Colegio Público Alces, which staffed all the refreshment points along the route. Puri Ropero expressed gratitude for the participation of all volunteers, as well as the collaboration from the local council, Civil Protection, and the Red Cross, stating that “without them, it would be very difficult to organise this event.” She also noted the positive feedback from runners crossing the finish line, highlighting their satisfaction with the course.
At the end of the day, trophies were awarded by councillors Gonzalo Redondo, Pedro Noblejas, and José Antonio Navarro, alongside Puri Ropero and Gloria Vela from the Club Maratón Altomira, as well as Luis García Morato, who received a trophy for his commitment and support for the event.
Councillor Gonzalo Redondo specifically acknowledged Puri Ropero’s efforts, noting that this was her first time organising the half marathon as president and commending her for the successful execution of the event. He praised the fact that “despite the weather, nearly 400 people participated in the competition, which is also thanks to the volunteers.”
