Civivox Pompelo to host talk on archaeological discoveries in Pamplona

Civivox Pompelo will host a talk this Monday evening at 7 PM to present key findings from ongoing excavations at Ronda del Obispo Barbazán, located behind the Cathedral of Pamplona. The event will feature archaeologist Iñaki Sagredo Garde, who is leading the excavation.

During the presentation, Sagredo will reveal the discovery of a second door at Canónigos, which was constructed on a substrate that predates a medieval door uncovered last year. This newly identified door, believed to be even older, stands approximately two metres tall and 1.4 metres wide.

The excavation work has involved significant reinforcement of the foundation to accommodate a new tower, which resulted in the removal of the ancient door and the addition of various fill materials, including remnants from a fire layer dated between the 6th and 8th centuries.

Among the Roman artefacts uncovered are pieces of sigillata pottery and coins, with a notable find being an Islamic coin in good condition. The excavations aim to enhance understanding of the city walls of Navarrería and the fortifications that belonged to the Kingdom of Navarre.

As part of this project, different construction layers and substrates have been studied after excavating an area measuring 10 by 5 metres to a depth of five metres. The current focus is on expanding the area previously excavated in September 2025, where a blind arch can be observed next to the Barbazana tower, stretching from the 'door of the Canónigos' to the Barbazana chapel.
