The Plaza de las Islas Azores hosted the first event of a week-long celebration organised by the Municipal Council of Fuencarral-El Pardo to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the district's integration into Madrid. The event was attended by Borja Carabante, the delegate for Urbanism, Environment and Mobility, and José Antonio Martínez Páramo, the district councillor, who recalled that Fuencarral joined the capital on 20 October 1951, bringing over 16,000 residents and 54 square kilometres to the city.
During the ceremony, 17 plaques were awarded to various community groups and institutions in recognition of their involvement, history, and commitment to Fuencarral. Among the recipients were the La Unión de Fuencarral Neighbourhood Association, the Tres Olivos Neighbourhood Association, the Valverde Neighbourhood Association, and the U.R. Poblado Dirigido Family Association, among others.
Carabante and Martínez Páramo also visited a monolith dedicated to the 'fuencarraleras', women who, since the 18th century, walked approximately ten kilometres to trade in central Madrid. The Historical Cultural Association Volunteers of Madrid 1808-1814 paraded in the square, representing the moment of the signing of the annexation act.
Residents and visitors can enjoy a range of activities until Tuesday, 27 October, including a tour of the four chapels surrounding the old town, a tribute to the singer Antonio Molina, guided tours of iconic locations, and several exhibitions open until 30 October.
