Mayor Gema Igual took part in the commemoration of the 133rd anniversary of the Cabo Machichaco explosion, which included a prayer in memory of the 590 victims, alongside a floral tribute. The event was attended by María José González Revuelta, the President of the Cantabria Parliament, Pedro Casares, the Government Delegate, Tamara González, the Culture Minister, César Díaz, the President of the Port Authority, and Roberto García Borbolla, President of the Real Asociación Cabo de Machichaco.
Also present were members of the Santander city council, along with other civil and military authorities, as well as representatives from the Fire Brigade, Local Police, and National Police. The commemoration began with a prayer and continued with the laying of a laurel wreath at the monument dedicated to the victims.
“Today we gather in a simple yet heartfelt act of remembrance around the monument, which reflects the unity that all Santander residents showed in the face of tragedy, as well as the solidarity that now, in different circumstances, rises to the surface,” stated the mayor at the conclusion of the event.
