Vigo's mayor, Abel Caballero, has revealed the city's sports budget for 2027, amounting to €21,194,728. This figure represents a decrease from the €22.8 million allocated in 2026.

The budget includes €4.5 million earmarked for the operation of municipal swimming pools and substantial investments in various sports facilities across the city, including the Madroa complex, Travesas, Bouza, and the athletics tracks at Balaídos.

Caballero emphasised the importance of this budget, stating, "It is a very high budget for sports because we want to support sports in the city." The allocations cover the maintenance and operation of sports facilities, support for local clubs, and funding for sports schools and infrastructure improvements.

Among the notable allocations is €1,342,000 for the O Marisquiño festival, which the council fully funds. Additionally, €1,150,000 is designated for grants to clubs and non-profit sports entities, while the opening and closing of sports facilities in local parishes will receive €1,200,000, reflecting a 2% increase from the previous year.

Specific allocations include approximately €1.8 million for the Travesas pool, €972,000 for Lavadores, €1.04 million for Teis, which is set to open early next year, and €683,000 for Valadares. Additionally, €264,822 is allocated for gym instructors at the Berbés and O Carme facilities.

Support for sports schools and collaborations

The council has also reserved €510,000 for sports schools, which serve thousands of children in the city. Collaboration with the University of Vigo for improving its sports facilities will receive €300,000, a 50% increase from the previous year. Other allocations include €170,000 for investment aid in sports facilities, €150,000 for the VIDE Foundation, €100,000 for sporting events, and €50,000 for elite athletes.

Facility improvements and maintenance

In terms of facility maintenance and enhancements, the municipal government has set aside €880,000. This includes €120,000 for maintaining football pitches, €380,000 for facility improvements, €300,000 for further enhancements, and €80,000 for sports equipment.

Major projects planned for 2027 include an investment of €824,638 for improvements to the Madroa sports complex, €650,000 for repairs to the roof of the pavilion-frontón, and €525,000 for changing rooms at the Bouza football field. Additional funds will be allocated for the Travesas pavilion roof and the completion of a new swimming pool in Teis.

Support for local sports clubs

Caballero highlighted the financial support for local sports clubs, including €200,000 for the Bosco women's basketball team, €185,000 for Coruxo FC, and €140,000 for organising international competitions. Other allocations include €60,000 for Vigo Voleibol, €50,000 for the Rally Rías Baixas, and €40,000 each for Bembrive Futsal and Traviesas Hockey Club.

Outside the specific sports budget, the municipal accounts also reserve €1.2 million for the Municipal Stadium of Balaídos, aimed at completing the Gol stand and the first annual payment for the future Tribuna stand.

"This is an exceptional budget for sports, which is a key development factor in the city of Vigo," concluded the mayor.
