Aemet warns of increased rainfall intensity in the Region of Murcia

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued an updated special warning regarding heavy and persistent showers and storms affecting the Mediterranean coastal areas, including the Region of Murcia. This warning, designated as Special Notice No. 37/2026, was released on Sunday at 13:39.

The new alert indicates that rainfall accumulations could exceed 50 litres per square metre within one hour, and between 100 and 140 litres over a 12-hour period in the coastal and pre-coastal areas of Murcia, Alicante, and Almería.

During the late hours of Sunday, 18 October, rainfall is expected to intensify in these regions, with localised heavy or torrential downpours continuing into the first half of Monday, 19 October. Aemet warns of the potential for local flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, as well as sudden increases in water levels in streams and gullies, especially in areas already saturated from previous rainfall.

Preventive recommendations

  • Avoid crossing streams, riverbeds, or flooded areas, even if they appear to have little water.
  • Limit unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
  • Exercise extreme caution on roads, underpasses, and areas prone to flooding.
  • Do not park vehicles in riverbeds or flood-prone areas.
  • Follow the guidance of emergency services.

Aemet also notes that there remains uncertainty regarding the exact location and amount of expected rainfall, advising the public to consult official updates and forecasts regularly.
