Alicante province strengthens municipal support at Brussels event

The Diputación de Alicante is currently working in Brussels to advance climate change mitigation and adaptation policies for municipalities within the province. Magdalena Martínez, the deputy for the environment, is participating in the 2026 Covenant of Mayors Ceremony, a key event for administrations, organisations, and professionals across Europe focused on sustainability, energy savings, and environmental protection.

“Alicante is an enterprising province, committed to and respectful of the environment, continuously generating synergies to foster a more sustainable and resilient territory,” said Martínez. She emphasised the importance of planning projects tactically and logistically, stating that the actions taken today will shape future territories, leading to efficient, friendly, and clean cities.

Martínez also highlighted that the Diputación de Alicante has been assisting local councils for years in meeting the objectives of the Covenant of Mayors through various funding lines and calls for projects. Notably, the 'Optimiza' Energy Saving Plan focuses on improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This includes initiatives such as the creation of electric vehicle charging points, the installation of photovoltaic panels for self-consumption, the renewal of public lighting systems, and improvements to the thermal performance of municipal buildings.

As part of the Covenant of Mayors, the institution collaborates with local councils to conduct reference emission inventories, vulnerability assessments, climate action plans, and quantitative monitoring reports, among other initiatives.

Covenant of Mayors

Through the Provincial Energy Agency, the Diputación de Alicante coordinates and advises the 140 municipalities currently adhering to the Covenant of Mayors. The main objectives are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels), achieve climate neutrality by 2050, and enhance resilience through adaptation to climate change effects while combating energy poverty.

This professional meeting serves as a platform to discuss the implementation of the Covenant of Mayors at an international level, addressing key challenges municipalities face regarding climate, energy, and adaptation to climate change.
