The Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Sport is set to celebrate Flamenco Day in Andalusia on 16 November, with over 100 activities planned across the region's eight provinces. These events, which will begin this week, aim to promote and raise awareness of flamenco, an art form deeply rooted in Andalusian culture.
This year's celebration marks the 16th anniversary of UNESCO's declaration of flamenco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The programme will feature a mix of grand performances, innovative proposals, educational activities, and initiatives to promote the jondo heritage, involving more than 280 artists and professionals.
Patricia del Pozo, the Minister of Culture, emphasised that flamenco is an artistic expression that is currently experiencing a vibrant moment of creativity and appreciation. She stated, "All Andalusians have the right and responsibility to know, defend, and preserve it." Del Pozo also highlighted the establishment of flamenco as a significant cultural industry in Andalusia, noting its ability to reinvent itself and blend with other forms of expression while remaining connected to its roots.
Key events and tributes
A notable highlight of this year's celebration is the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the birth of José Monge Cruz, known as 'Camarón de la Isla', a pivotal figure in flamenco music. In collaboration with the Confederation of Andalusian Flamenco Peñas, a series of 16 performances will take place across various flamenco peñas in the region, with two shows in each province. These performances will occur around the anniversary date and again on 5 December, coinciding with the birth date of the legendary cantaor.
Additionally, 58 performances will be held in peñas flamencas across Andalusia to further celebrate Flamenco Day and engage new audiences.
Flamenco Expuesto and educational initiatives
Another project aimed at promoting flamenco in the eight provincial capitals is the second edition of 'Flamenco Expuesto'. This initiative seeks to connect flamenco with contemporary art spaces, photography, painting, and visual arts. On the morning of 15 November, eight simultaneous performances will feature prominent flamenco dancers at various iconic locations, including the Andalusian Centre for Contemporary Art in Seville and the Museum of Málaga.
The commemorative programme also includes 'AIEnRUTa. University and Flamenco', which aims to support young artists and integrate flamenco into university settings. Events will feature performances by various musicians and singers at educational institutions throughout the month.
On 6 November, the National Auditorium of Music in Madrid will host the Gala of the Andalusian Circuit of Young Flamencos, showcasing emerging talents in the flamenco scene.
Community engagement and educational outreach
The celebration will incorporate a strong educational component, with the Ministry of Education promoting flamenco knowledge within the educational community. A new edition of the Flamenco in the Classroom awards will take place on 16 November in Seville, alongside concerts and artistic interventions at conservatories across Andalusia.
Furthermore, an immersive experience called 'Musiccoles y Olé' will gather over 800 schoolchildren in Linares. The programme will also feature an educational video by Rosario La Tremendita aimed at schools, a reading of the Flamenco Day manifesto by the Cristina Heeren Foundation, and a roundtable discussion in Almería in collaboration with the SGAE Foundation.
