Bizkaia has officially taken over from Argentina as the host for the next edition of the World Championship of Pelota Vasca, scheduled for 2030. The competition will be held at two venues: the Bizkaia Frontoia in Bilbao and the Jai Alai in Gernika-Lumo.
During a ceremony at the Club Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Leixuri Arrizabalaga, the deputy for Euskara, Culture and Sport, along with Carlos Sergio, the director of Sports, received the event's baton from Pablo Lambardi, president of the Argentine Confederation of Pelota (CAP).
Arrizabalaga emphasised the significance of hosting the World Championship in Bizkaia for the first time, highlighting the deep-rooted connection of the sport within the region. She also acknowledged the responsibility that comes with organising such an international event.
Bizkaia's bid to host the 2030 World Championship was presented in 2022 in Biarritz during the General Assembly of the International Federation of Pelota Vasca (FIPV) and was unanimously approved.
Historically, the World Championships have attracted over 500 players from more than thirty countries across five continents, featuring competitions in nearly 20 different modalities.
