The mayor of Ciudad Real, Francisco Cañizares, welcomed participants of the II National Competition of University Tunas in the exhibition hall of the town hall. This weekend, 175 tunos from various parts of Spain are gathered in the city for the event.
Also present at the reception was the councillor for Social Services, Aurora Galisteo, along with members of the municipal corporation. During the meeting, Cañizares expressed his gratitude to the Tuna Universitaria de Ciudad Real for their initiative and involvement in organising an event that combines music, tradition, and social commitment.
The mayor highlighted that “Ciudad Real is an open city that enjoys hosting initiatives that fill our streets with life and have a charitable purpose.” He emphasised the importance of university culture and traditions as tools to support social causes and improve people's lives.
Cañizares encouraged the residents of Ciudad Real to participate in the scheduled activities and support this charitable initiative, with all proceeds going to VivELA to aid research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Music and tradition in the streets of ciudad real
The competition, organised by the Tuna Universitaria de Ciudad Real, features five visiting groups from Madrid, Albacete, Seville, Córdoba, and León, in addition to the host tuna. The programme began on Friday with a performance under the terrace of the Antiguo Casino and will continue on Saturday with a parade through the city centre.
The event will conclude in the afternoon at 18:00 with the national contest at the Teatro Quijano, where the six groups will showcase their talent to the audience. Through this initiative, Ciudad Real reaffirms its role as a meeting point for university tradition and music, while also raising awareness of ALS and collecting funds to promote its research.
