CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel is currently hospitalised at the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria after suffering a severe impact during a match against FC Andorra, which was suspended in the 108th minute. The club has issued a statement indicating that his neurological condition has worsened.
The match ended abruptly after a serious incident involving De Miguel and the visiting goalkeeper, Jesús Owono. De Miguel collapsed on the pitch after receiving a heavy blow to the face, requiring immediate medical assistance. The situation prompted a swift reaction from players on both teams, who called for medical services upon realising the severity of the attacker's condition.
De Miguel appeared to be unconscious on the field, causing significant concern among fans at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium. The incident occurred as De Miguel was making a run from midfield to capitalise on a counter-attack. Owono left his area and advanced several metres to intercept the ball, colliding with De Miguel's face with either his knee or thigh. The referee penalised the action and sent off the Andorra goalkeeper.
However, the focus quickly shifted to De Miguel's condition, as he required several minutes of medical attention before being taken off the pitch. An ambulance left the stadium to applause from the home supporters while medical personnel attended to the player.
Initially, CD Tenerife reported that De Miguel was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital, stating that he was "stable, but serious." The club's medical staff are present at the hospital and will provide updates on the player's condition as they become available.
The match, which had ended in a 2-2 draw, was suspended in the final minutes. Tenerife had taken a 2-0 lead, but Andorra equalised with two goals in the 80th and 87th minutes. The match, part of the twelfth round of LaLiga Hypermotion, was originally scheduled for Sunday but was postponed due to severe weather warnings in Tenerife.
Support for De Miguel has poured in from various institutions and clubs. The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, have expressed their solidarity with the player and his family. The football community has rallied around Jesús de Miguel, with messages of encouragement from teams such as Real Madrid, Sevilla FC, and numerous others from LaLiga Hypermotion.
