The Diputación de Córdoba has unveiled a new edition of the classic play Don Juan Tenorio, written by José Zorrilla and staged by the Compañía Teatro Par under the direction of Antonio Barrios. This year’s performances will occur at the Palacio de la Merced, the seat of the provincial institution.
This annual production, which has been staged for nearly thirty years, is promoted by the Cultural Delegation of the Diputación de Córdoba to coincide with the All Saints' festivities. The play presents a romantic drama featuring dark settings, including a cemetery scene set in the Patio Blanco, the impossible romance between Doña Inés and Don Juan, as well as duels and challenges between Tenorio and Don Luis. The narrative is enriched by mystery and the appearance of ghosts within the Palacio de la Merced, culminating in the triumph of love.
Performances are scheduled for 30 and 31 October, and 1 and 2 November, starting at 20:30. Gabriel Duque, the Cultural Delegate, highlighted the unique staging of this traditional performance, as scenes will unfold in various rooms of the Palacio de la Merced, including the Baroque Patio, the Patio Blanco, and the church of La Merced. This year, for the first time, the entire performance will be held on the ground floor of the provincial seat.
Duque also noted that the production has been consistently performed for almost 30 years, with 25 of those years uninterrupted, catering to the public of Córdoba and surrounding municipalities. He confirmed that attendees from La Rambla, Torrecampo, Montemayor, and Villanueva de Córdoba will be arriving by bus, provided by the Diputación.
Antonio Barrios, the director of the Compañía de Teatro Clásico de Córdoba, remarked, “The Tenorio returns to the Diputación de Córdoba, it returns home.” He expressed gratitude for the institution's support, stating that the Cultural Delegation has always assisted in bringing theatre to smaller communities that lack the resources to host such events.
Invitations for the performances will be available from 27 October, starting at 12:00.
