The General Directorate of Tourism has introduced the new Gastronomic Tourism Strategy for Extremadura at an event held at the Congress Palace in Mérida. The presentation featured Laureano León, the regional Minister of Culture, Tourism and Sports, and Óscar Mateos, the General Director of Tourism.
This strategy will outline the actions for the coming years to solidify gastronomy as a key differentiating factor in the region's tourism offerings and to strengthen Extremadura's positioning as a leading destination. Minister León emphasised that "Extremadura possesses an extraordinary gastronomic heritage and all the necessary resources to establish itself as a reference destination in Spain and southern Europe."
He further highlighted that the new Regional Gastronomic Tourism Strategy, developed with input from the entire sector, aims to make gastronomy a catalyst for rural development, enhance territorial identity, and create value for businesses, workers, and visitors.
The evolution of tourist demand has placed gastronomy among the most significant factors influencing destination choice, as travellers seek authentic experiences that connect them with local culture and reveal the identity of the places they visit.
The new roadmap from the General Directorate of Tourism incorporates over a decade of accumulated experience and adapts its objectives to emerging market trends, with a particular focus on developing authentic, sustainable, and high-quality experiences.
The strategy also aims to foster new development opportunities, especially in rural areas, contributing to job creation and strengthening the business fabric. Minister León stated that the Junta de Extremadura intends to promote the strategy "continuously and in ongoing dialogue with producers, hoteliers, destinations, guides, agencies, and institutions, as its success will depend on the collaborative efforts of all parties involved."
During the event, the development plan for gastronomic tourism was presented, covering the structuring of this tourism product, the competitiveness of the gastronomic offer, and the management of this segment. The regional gastronomic tourism marketing plan was also discussed, which includes branding, storytelling, promotion, digitalisation, and support for commercialisation.
The new document aims to serve as a shared working tool for various stakeholders linked to tourism and gastronomy, reinforcing public-private collaboration as a key element in furthering the development of Extremadura as a premier gastronomic destination.
