The Mercado de Abastos in Guadalajara has transformed into the heart of the region's agricultural offerings this weekend, hosting the inaugural Producers' Market. This event, which opened its doors today, features around thirty exhibitors from the province, allowing visitors to discover, taste, and purchase local food products directly from their producers.
Among the items on display are honey, olive oil, wine, cheese, artisan bread, sweets, and game meat. The market is organised by the City Council of Guadalajara in collaboration with the Provincial Association of Farmers and Ranchers (APAG).
During the opening ceremony, Mayor Ana Guarinos, along with the Councillor for Commerce and Tourism, Víctor Morejón, and APAG President Juan José Laso, welcomed attendees to this two-day celebration of local gastronomy, which also includes cultural activities, children's events, and live music.
“Flavours are part of the identity of Guadalajara, alongside its places and heritage,” said Mayor Guarinos. She emphasised the diversity of local food products and highlighted the market as a meeting point for residents to enjoy and learn about the rural work that supports the city.
Víctor Morejón added that the direct interaction with exhibitors provides the public with insights into the origins of their food and an opportunity to share experiences with the producers. He also noted the inclusion of local musicians and young talent in the programme, inviting both locals and visitors to explore the Mercado de Abastos over the weekend.
Juan José Laso stressed the importance of understanding the people behind the products, including family businesses, farmers, and ranchers from Guadalajara. He underscored the need for consumers to be informed about the origins of their food and the local agro-food production.
One of the highlights of the day was the presentation and tasting of the “Zanganito de la Alcarria,” a dessert created by the Hospitality School of CIFP number 1 in Guadalajara, featuring honey and chocolate, which encapsulates the region's flavours.
The programme continues this afternoon with a popular grandmother's tea featuring traditional flavours such as bread with chocolate, oil, and sugar, alongside workshops for children and a performance by the Cultural Folklore Association “Ali-Waqara.” A cheese tasting from the Quesería de Hita is scheduled for 7:00 PM, followed by a live performance from the group “Los Camaroneros.”
Tomorrow, Saturday 24 October, the market will open at 10:30 AM, starting with a session titled “Bread, Health, and Myths” and a bread tasting at 11:00 AM. Other activities include a workshop on honey production, a saffron cooking demonstration, and a charity stew offered by El Pairón, accompanied by DJ Dabiku.
The event promises to be a family-friendly experience, featuring product sales and tastings alongside exhibitions, inflatable attractions for children, and various activities aimed at celebrating the rich culinary heritage of Guadalajara.
