Sanxenxo celebrates day of libraries with awards for elderly readers

Sanxenxo has celebrated the Day of Libraries with a special recognition for its oldest readers. This morning, the Education councillor, Nati Parada, awarded a diploma and a book to José Janza Valladares, aged 98, a regular user of the Sanxenxo library.

Also honoured was 97-year-old Lieselotte Katscher, a user of the Portonovo Library. The initiative aims to highlight that reading knows no age limits and to reinforce local libraries as spaces for learning and community engagement across generations.

Currently, Sanxenxo boasts 5,844 registered users across its three service points: the Emilia Pardo Bazán Library, the Portonovo Library, and the Vilalonga Reading Agency. Among the most popular titles are:

  • For adults: Os crimes de Lodeiro, El valor de la atención, Las crónicas de Narnia, Llevará tu nombre, Golpes de Luz, and Vivir con serenidad.
  • For children: El diario de Mike, Policán, Boni vs Mono, Diferentes, pero iguales.
  • Manga comics: Pikachu, Dragonball, and Naruto.

Throughout the year, the libraries host numerous activities as part of the programme Ler conta moito, which has been well received by children and families. Notable events this year included Nube de Algodón, Trasnadas, and María da Pontragha.

As part of the programme Coñece a túa biblioteca, school visits are organised to familiarise students with the facilities, tailored to different age groups. Between April and May this year, students from CEIP de Noalla, CEIP A Florida de Sanxenxo, CEIP Magaláns, and CEIP Nantes visited the libraries.
