Government highlights role of crime fiction in promoting reading and critical thinking

The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha has underscored the role of crime fiction as a literary genre that not only ignites interest in reading but also encourages reflection on the human condition, social conflicts, and the pressing questions of contemporary society. This was articulated by Carmen Teresa Olmedo, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, during her address at the IV Mystery Congress held at the Casa de la Cultura in Illescas, a town in Toledo.

Olmedo highlighted the ability of such events to bring literature closer to diverse audiences and facilitate direct interaction between writers and readers. She stated, “Crime fiction is much more than entertainment. It is a genre that invites us to observe reality from different perspectives, to ask questions, and to develop our critical capacity.”

The Deputy Minister also emphasised the participatory nature of the literary event, where attendees not only have the chance to meet various authors but also engage in investigative activities through the resolution of a mystery that unfolds throughout the day. “Literature can also be a shared experience. Events like this allow us to discover new stories, exchange impressions, and enjoy books from a different, closer, and more participative perspective,” she remarked.

The fourth edition of the Mystery Congress in Illescas featured participation from authors such as Manuel Marlasca, Inés Plana, Marta Robles, Cristina Higueras, Juan Tranche, Laila Cabrera, Ernesto Pérez López, Estefanía García Durán, and Ana González Duque, alongside a literary meeting with Mikel Santiago. The programme included discussion panels, interviews, audience questions, book signings, and a collective investigative activity centred around a mystery written by local author Estefanía García Durán.

In conclusion, Carmen Teresa Olmedo expressed her gratitude to the organisers, authors, and participants for their involvement in a day dedicated to literature and encouraged attendees to continue discovering new readings and sharing their passion for books.
