International retrospective on early Spanish cinema features Miss Ledyia in Italy with support from the Filmoteca de Galicia

On October 4, 2026, the Consellería de Cultura, Lingua e Xuventude is promoting the participation of the Filmoteca de Galicia as a collaborating entity in the largest international retrospective on early Spanish cinema. This event will take place from October 5 to 8 as part of the 45th edition of Le giornate del Cine Muto, a globally recognized festival dedicated to silent film.

The Filmoteca de Galicia has facilitated the screening of Miss Ledyia, a film directed by José Gil in 1916, which is regarded as the first fictional film produced in Galicia. The film will be shown on October 7, alongside 62 other cinematic works in this inaugural anthology dedicated to the origins of cinema in Spain. This collection has been collaboratively curated by participating film archives to provide a comprehensive overview of the period from 1896 to 1916, encompassing a broad territorial and thematic perspective.

The project involves a dozen film libraries, archives, and institutions across Spain, aiming to highlight a crucial cultural heritage for understanding the birth of cinematic culture. It also emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts among these entities in preserving, studying, and disseminating the history of film.

In addition to the Filmoteca de Galicia, other participants in this retrospective include the Filmoteca Valenciana, Filmoteca Canaria, Arxiu de l'So i de la Imatge de Mallorca, Filmoteca de Zaragoza, Nafarroako Filmoteka/Filmoteca de Navarra, Filmoteca de Andalucía, Euskadiko Filmategia/Filmoteca Vasca, Museu de Cine de Girona-Col·lecció Tomàs Mallol, Biblioteca de Catalunya, Filmoteca de Catalunya, and Filmoteca Española.

Miss Ledyia is notable not only for its historical significance but also for featuring a small role played by Castelao, a prominent figure in Galician culture. The Filmoteca de Galicia, as the principal institution responsible for safeguarding Galician audiovisual heritage, preserves and promotes the region's film legacy. Currently, it houses approximately 15,500 copies of cinematic materials, including around 3,500 films and over 12,000 video works, with titles dating back to 1913. The collection also includes around 11,000 film posters and a photographic archive with more than 60,000 records.
