The 34th Palma de Plata 'City of Algeciras' commenced its cultural month with an inaugural event held at the Paco de Lucía Interpretation Centre. This year's programme is dedicated to the flamenco singer José el de la Tomasa and began with an illustrated discussion titled 'The language of flamenco singing', led by Chemi López from La Droguería Music.
Following the discussion, attendees enjoyed a performance featuring traditional flamenco singing by Manuel Moneo 'Barullo', Domingo Rubichi, and Jesús Moneo 'El Aóño' Carpio. The event was attended by Pilar Pintor, the first deputy mayor and delegate for Culture, alongside Sabina Quiles, the councillor for Markets and Commerce.
Organised by the Society of Great Singing in collaboration with the Algeciras City Council, the gathering highlighted the ongoing significance and growing prestige of this event, which reinforces Algeciras' identity as a flamenco city and preserves the legacy of Paco de Lucía, the city's beloved son.
Pintor expressed gratitude to the Society of Great Singing, José el de la Tomasa, the artists, their families, and the municipal professionals and services that make each edition possible. The cultural month will culminate on Saturday, 21 November, at 20:30 with the gala presentation of the 34th Palma de Plata at the Teatro Florida, dedicated to José el de la Tomasa. The show will feature prominent artists in singing, guitar playing, and dancing, including Manuel de la Tomasa, Rafael El Lele, and the dancer Concha Vargas. The City Council invites the public and flamenco enthusiasts to join this significant celebration.
