Lugo to host the 10th edition of 'Culture and Tradition on the Camino' featuring workshops, music, and exhibitions

The event will take place until Sunday, October 11, at the Espazo RelembrA and the Xunta de Galicia Tourism Office, with all activities offered free of charge.

Lugo to host the 10th edition of 'Culture and Tradition on the Camino' featuring workshops, music, and exhibitions

The 10th edition of 'Culture and Tradition on the Camino' will kick off tomorrow, Sunday, October 4, and run until Sunday, October 11. The event will be held at the Espazo RelembrA and the Xunta de Galicia Tourism Office, located at Calle do Miño, numbers 12 and 14. All activities are free for participants.

Event Schedule

The programming will feature a variety of workshops focused on traditional crafts and music performances, showcasing different aspects of Galician culture and tradition throughout the week. Workshops will be held from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, while musical performances will take place daily from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Workshops on Traditional Crafts

The event will begin with a workshop on straw basketry led by Álvaro M. Leiro, a recipient of the National Crafts Award, and another on wicker basketry with Beatriz Valín. Additionally, there will be a demonstration workshop on handmade candle making by Alberto Uria. Some workshops require prior registration via email at traxandaina@gmail.com.

  • October 5: Continuing straw and wicker basketry workshops.
  • October 6: Straw basketry and traditional ribbon embroidery.
  • October 7: Continuing embroidery work and introducing traditional dyeing.
  • October 8: Group workshops on goldsmithing and tapestry initiation, continuing on October 9 and 10.

Musical Program

The musical program will also commence tomorrow at 7:00 PM in the Church of San Pedro, featuring the Miro Casabella Ensemble, which will present a performance dedicated to the cantigas of Alfonso X el Sabio. Casabella is known for his work in reviving and promoting traditional Galician music and is recognized as a pioneer in the interpretation of the zanfona, a traditional string instrument.

  • October 6: Xisco Feijóo with 'The Voice of Effort: Songs of Labor in Galician Tradition.'
  • October 7: Cantos de ciego.
  • October 8: As Cegas de Ouselle: 'As Cegas da Montaña.'
  • October 9: Caruncho with more cantos de ciego.
  • October 10: Suso Vaamonde, continuing the theme.

Exhibitions at Espazo RelembrA

Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit various exhibitions related to traditional culture, including weaving works from the Etnographic Group Traxandaina and another showcasing traditional clothing from the same organization. The exhibitions will be open according to the schedule of activities, and entry to the Espazo RelembrA (Museum) will be free.

The 10th edition of 'Culture and Tradition on the Camino' aims to bring together different artisanal techniques, traditional crafts, music, and expressions of Galician culture throughout the week, coinciding with the San Froilán festivities.
