Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Spanish Government, visited the Armón shipyards in Gijón, Asturias, on 26 October 2026. The shipyards are known for designing and constructing vessels up to 180 metres in length, including fishing boats, tugs, and research vessels.
During his visit, Sánchez was accompanied by Adrián Barbón, the President of the Principality of Asturias, and Cecilia Pérez, the Government Delegate in Asturias. They were joined by representatives from Armón, including José Ramón Fernández, the group's president, and CEO Laudelino Alperi.
The Prime Minister toured the production facilities and the dry dock, where he observed the progress on the first 100% electric fast ferry, which will be operated by Baleària. A second unit is also planned, both of which will serve the future zero-emission maritime corridor between Tarifa, Spain, and Tangier, Morocco.
Armón is the largest private shipyard in Spain, with five centres located in Asturias and Galicia, and has the capacity to construct 40 vessels annually. As part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, the company has benefited from the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) of the Naval Industry. In recent years, it has received over two million euros for research, development, and innovation projects, as well as initiatives related to energy efficiency and renewable energy. Notably, one of these projects includes the construction of a hydrogen-powered tugboat.
