Piélagos revitalises sports court in Barrio San Martín, Zurita

The Piélagos Town Council has begun the revitalisation of the sports court in Barrio San Martín, Zurita, as part of a comprehensive transformation of local infrastructure and mobility, supported by an investment of nearly €300,000. Mayor Carlos Caramés, accompanied by the Councillor for General Services and President of the Local Community Board, David Diego, visited the ongoing works at the sports facility, funded by the Cantabria Government's Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport.

Caramés explained that the project aims to improve the court surface to ensure optimal conditions for sports practice, similar to previous initiatives completed in nearby areas such as Mortera, Boo, Vioño, and Salcedo. In addition to applying various layers for levelling and stabilisation of the court, outdoor gym equipment has been installed for both older residents and those recovering from injuries.

A comprehensive transformation

The mayor emphasised that the revitalisation of the sports court is part of a broader initiative to transform Barrio San Martín de Zurita. This includes the construction of a new pavement from the CA-332 regional road to the sports area, where the children's play area has been relocated, renovated, and expanded. The previous petanque courts, which had fallen into disuse since the new ones were built next to the local Social Centre, have been repurposed into a resting area.

Caramés noted that the council will not only provide a new pavement from the regional road to the sports area but will also extend it towards adjacent urbanisations, creating new, accessible, and safe pedestrian routes. Additionally, with community collaboration, a much-needed new parking area will be established on a nearby plot, freeing the road of parked vehicles. This will allow for sufficient width for two-way traffic, improving safety for pedestrians, particularly in areas where visibility was previously obstructed due to the narrow road and lack of pavements.

“This comprehensive initiative, with an investment close to €300,000, will bring about a radical change to the heart of the village of Zurita, establishing it as a gathering place for children, young people, and the elderly,” concluded the mayor.
