Tasca do Liño in Insua celebrates 18 years with support from the Diputación

Tasca do Liño in Insua will celebrate its 18th anniversary on Saturday, 31 October, with a festive and cultural day aimed at promoting traditional crafts and local culture. The event will commence at 11:00 hours at the Insua festival grounds in Vilalba, offering a wide range of activities throughout the day.

Among the highlights are stalls showcasing artisan crafts and live demonstrations of traditional trades such as pottery, weaving, wood carving, and the making of traditional shoes known as zocos. This year’s event will feature actor and director Rubén Riós as the guest speaker, combining tradition, culture, and rural development while celebrating the identity and cultural heritage of this Vilalba parish.

The programme was presented on Thursday at the Diputación, with participation from Pilar García Porto, the deputy for Internal Regime, Territory Promotion, and Tourism; Marta Rouco, the mayor of Vilalba; and Lourdes Otero, president of the Rural Women’s Association of San Bartolomeu de Insua. Riós will deliver the opening speech for this year’s celebration.

A new addition to the event is the sponsorship from the Adolfo Domínguez Foundation, which collaborates with the Rural Women’s Association of Insua as part of the Galician Initiative for Linen. This partnership aims to enhance the visibility of Galician traditional crafts and textiles.

During the presentation, García Porto commended the association for its efforts over the years and highlighted the significance of initiatives that help preserve popular culture and invigorate rural areas. She stated, “Tasca do Liño has reached eighteen editions, demonstrating that with commitment, enthusiasm, and a desire to preserve our heritage, initiatives can grow and become established.”

García Porto also emphasised the role of women in maintaining traditional knowledge and passing it down through generations. The recovery of traditional linen processing is a central theme of this celebration, as the cultivation of this plant and the transformation of its fibres into textiles has been a part of Galician family life for centuries.

Lourdes Otero expressed pride in reaching eighteen editions while continuing to preserve the legacy of previous generations. The association aims to keep the knowledge of linen cultivation and processing alive and to share it with younger generations to help them understand their roots.

Mayor Marta Rouco praised the initiative led by the women of the parish and called for recognition of the work that “has long remained invisible, despite its importance to family life and rural areas.”
