Toledo city council enhances commitment to quality cinema with new municipal film club cycle

The municipal film club in Toledo is set to launch a new cycle of screenings aimed at promoting access to quality cinema. Organised by the city council's Department of Culture and Heritage, the programme will run from October to December and is titled 'Human Geographies: Eight Perspectives on the Present and Memory'.

This new initiative will showcase eight films from various countries, including Spain, France, Palestine, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, and Austria. The selection emphasises auteur cinema, artistic quality, cultural diversity, and contemporary relevance. The films will explore themes such as memory, identity, belonging, human connections, personal choices, and second chances, presented through a variety of genres and styles.

The programme will kick off on 13 and 14 October with 'The Musicians' by French director Grégory Magne, followed by 'Palestine 36' by Annemarie Jacir, 'The Black Ball' by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, 'The Perfect Copy' by Jean-Paul Salomé, 'Bad Apples' by Jonatan Etzler, 'The Last Round in Venice' by Francesco Sossai, and 'Rose' by Markus Schleinzer. Additionally, the programme will include sessions of CIBRA on 26 and 27 October and 2 and 3 November.

The quality of the selected films is underscored by their recognition at various festivals. Notably, 'The Black Ball' received the Best Director award at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and Audience Awards at the San Sebastián and Toronto festivals. 'The Last Round in Venice' was featured in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes and won eight David di Donatello awards, while 'Rose' was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at the Berlin Film Festival.

The city council is committed to making cultural programming accessible to all citizens, offering reduced ticket prices to ensure that financial barriers do not hinder access to quality cinema. Furthermore, the municipal film club decentralises its programming by screening films at various locations throughout Toledo, allowing residents from different neighbourhoods to enjoy the films closer to home. Screenings will take place on Mondays at 20:00 at the Unicaja Cultural Centre, Tuesdays at 19:00 and 22:00 at the Teatro de Rojas, and Wednesdays at 20:00 at the Thalía Room on Río Bullaque Street.

This initiative not only extends the reach of the film club beyond the historic centre but also aims to bring cinematic culture to the suburbs of Toledo. The municipal film club has consistently received strong support from the local community, making its sessions one of the most popular cultural offerings in the city. The Toledo city council encourages film enthusiasts and all citizens to engage with this new programme and discover a selection of films that raise universally relevant questions and conflicts through diverse realities and cultures.
