The city of Toledo is set to host its first Imperial Marathon on 15 November, an event that Mayor Carlos Velázquez describes as the culmination of a long-held dream for many locals. Velázquez stated that the marathon is a demonstration of what can be achieved when a community believes in its potential.

During the official presentation of the marathon, the mayor expressed gratitude to all institutions, sponsors, sports clubs, volunteers, municipal workers, and law enforcement agencies involved in making the event possible. He highlighted that the marathon represents a significant milestone in the city’s comprehensive sports policy aimed at promoting physical activity across all ages and disciplines.

Velázquez noted that Toledo, recognised as a European City of Sport, is committed to fostering healthy lifestyles and sports participation. He remarked, “Sport makes better people and better cities,” and stressed the economic and tourism benefits the marathon will bring to Toledo.

With participants from 22 countries, the marathon has already positioned itself among the most popular in Spain, boasting over 3,200 registered runners. The mayor anticipates that many participants will extend their stay in the city, contributing to local hospitality and economic activity.

While acknowledging potential disruptions to mobility during the event, Velázquez assured citizens that efforts have been made to minimise inconvenience and maintain regular city activities on the marathon day.

Rubén Lozano, the city’s councillor for the environment, the Tajo River, and sports, provided details about the race. The marathon will start at the Mirador del Valle and finish at the Paseo Imperial de la Vega. Runners will depart in three waves: the marathon at 09:00, handbike participants at 09:12, and relay teams at 09:15.

The course will showcase various parts of the city, including the historic centre, with ten refreshment stations set up approximately every five kilometres using cardboard cups to reduce plastic waste. The event will also feature a comprehensive medical support system, including ambulances and first aid stations.

Lozano confirmed that the event expects around 400 volunteers and will include 15 cheer points along the route to encourage participants. The local police have developed a security and mobility plan to ensure the marathon runs smoothly while accommodating everyday city activities.

Inspector Miguel Fernández Arévalo of the Toledo Local Police explained that the police have been planning the operation since spring, coordinating with various sectors of the marathon route to ensure safety and communication with residents. He urged citizens to limit the use of personal vehicles on marathon day and to use public transport whenever possible.
