University of Almería launches pioneering dance training programme with inaugural performance

The University of Almería (UAL) has launched its unique dance training programme, titled Título Propio de Formación en Danza para la Escena, with a spectacular inaugural performance by students of 'La chica de la UAL' at the Kina Jiménez Professional Dance Conservatory. This event marks a significant milestone, as no other university in Spain has previously developed a similar programme.

Under the academic direction of Jorge Tarifa and artistic direction of Ángel Rodríguez, this initiative has attracted students from various countries. The training commenced on 1 October and culminated in the performance after a month of intensive work.

The showcase featured collaborations with Luisa María Arias and Isaac Montllor, principal dancers from the National Dance Company, along with Claudia Santamaría and Denis Montoya from the Young Ballet Nacho Duato. The event was opened by María del Mar Ruiz, UAL's Vice-Rector for Culture and Society, alongside other university representatives and Joaquín Pérez de la Blanca, the city’s Councillor for Culture.

Performances included the world premiere of 'Changes', choreographed by Ángel Rodríguez, 'L’amoroso' by Nacho Duato, and an excerpt from 'Muñecos de papel', also by Rodríguez. María del Mar Ruiz highlighted that this initiative will lead to the creation of a dance company named 'La Joven de la UAL', providing dancers with opportunities to showcase their skills in various performances.

María del Carmen Martínez, Director of the Permanent Training Secretariat, explained that this programme offers specialised training, ensuring continuity in the artistic and technical preparation of dancers. With a total of 1,163 hours of training, students will enhance their maturity as performers and acquire essential tools to meet the current demands of the profession in Spain.

Jorge Tarifa welcomed the students and emphasised the importance of this training within the performing arts sector. Ángel Rodríguez remarked that this project opens new avenues for dance in Almería and across Spain, aiming to raise awareness of the hard work and dedication of dancers. Councillor Joaquín Pérez de la Blanca underscored the significance of initiatives that create opportunities for young talent and contribute to the city’s cultural offerings, asserting that a culturally vibrant city is built by nurturing artists and supporting creators.
