As the new academic year begins, the theatre classrooms at the Ourense campus have officially started their activities. This year marks over three decades of theatrical training at the institution, with a welcoming event held on Monday that saw around 50 participants enroll in one of the three levels offered: Rosaura, Cordelia, and Maricastaña.
These theatre classes, which fall under the purview of the Vice-Rectorate of the Ourense campus, are part of a series of university extension workshops supported by the Provincial Council of Ourense. Coordinated by Fernando Dacosta from Sarabela Teatro, each group's activities take place weekly within the university facilities, complemented by various events and participation in theatrical showcases both in the city and beyond. Notable events include the International University Theatre Showcase of Ourense (Miteu) and the International Theatre Festival of Ourense (Fito), the latter currently celebrating a new edition with the backing of the University of Vigo.
Three levels of training
The Rosaura group, representing the first level, is designed for individuals new to the performing arts, offering an engaging and creative introduction. The second level, Cordelia, caters to those with some experience, focusing on character creation, dramaturgy, and the various elements surrounding a theatrical production. Lastly, Maricastaña is intended for more advanced students, delving into the complexities of staging a performance.
Throughout the academic year, the Maricastaña group will work towards presenting their production, tentatively titled Pobres diaños, inspired by Italo Calvino's book Marcovaldo or the Seasons in the City, at the Miteu. The training sessions involve professionals such as Sabela Gago, Fina Calleja, Flor Figueroa, and Alberto Medeiros, alongside Fernando Dacosta himself. Depending on the group, students will explore various aspects of performance, from physical movement to dramatic action and dramaturgy.
In the spring, each group will showcase their own performance, culminating in their participation in the 32nd edition of the Miteu, scheduled for 2027.
