Project approved to stabilise Benacantil hillside under Santa Bárbara Castle

The Local Government Board has approved a project aimed at stabilising and containing unstable rock material on the Monte Benacantil, located beneath the iconic Santa Bárbara Castle, with a budget of €5,558,583.

This decision follows an emergency procedure initiated on 2 September 2025, due to significant risks of landslides in the rocky massif. Initially, €1.5 million was allocated for urgent works, which were awarded to the construction company CHM.

The emergency agreement aimed to implement immediate measures necessary for the protection and containment of unstable rock material. These measures included drafting a detailed project to identify the areas of intervention, real danger zones, and the best available techniques for containment. The project also aimed to accurately define and quantify the necessary protective measures to mitigate the risk of rockfalls.

Infrastructure councillor Cristina García stated, “This action is necessary because the passage of time and erosion in this type of rock have caused deterioration, and safety is our top priority.”

The newly approved project will allow for precise assessments that were not possible at the onset of the emergency, including the total units executed, their measurements, and the final costs of the intervention. The works are expected to take 14 months to complete.
