Vigo council supports elite athletes with €50,000 in grants

The mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, attended a ceremony at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MARCO) to present municipal grants totalling €50,000 to 37 elite athletes representing 16 different sports. The financial support, which ranges from €800 to €2,500 per athlete, aims to assist with the costs associated with high-level sports practice, particularly travel expenses for competitions.

Caballero emphasised the city's commitment to supporting local athletes, stating, "We are here to support the elite athletes of the city."

Improvements to Relfas sports field

In addition to the athlete grants, the mayor announced the awarding of a contract for the repair of the underground sewage system at the municipal sports field of Relfas, located in Sárdoma. The project, which will cost approximately €17,981, is expected to take two months to complete and aims to enhance the functionality of the sewage system and address existing waste issues.

Caballero noted ongoing improvements to municipal football fields, recalling that earlier this year, the local government invested €718,681 to repair the perimeter slope of the Relfas field to resolve subsidence problems in one area. Furthermore, the council plans to upgrade the changing facilities using a modular system as part of a broader municipal initiative to renovate changing rooms across nine football fields in the city, with a total investment of €8,487,000. This programme includes facilities at Bouza, Carballal, Monte da Mina, San Andrés de Comesaña, A Guía, As Relfas, Candeán, Meixoeiro, and Santa Mariña.
