On October 9, 2026, the Conselleiro de Cultura, Lingua e Xuventude, José López Campos, announced the Xunta's decision to designate the A Domus Mitreo University Museum in Lugo as the center for the custody of archaeological materials recovered from the surrounding area. This announcement was made during a visit to the museum's facilities, which have been part of the Galician Museum Center System since 2025.
Accompanying López Campos were the Xunta's delegate, Alfonso Villares, and the Director General of Cultural Heritage, Ángel Miramontes. The Conselleiro noted that earlier this year, in January, the Consellería de Cultura, Lingua e Xuventude approved the relocation of archaeological materials from the Museo de O Castro to the Domus Mitreo. These materials originate from archaeological interventions near the historic Pazo de Montenegro.
López Campos emphasized the museum's strategic location, adjacent to Lugo's cathedral and the Santiago Gate of the Roman wall, making it a key cultural and tourist reference in the city. The Domus Mitreo features remains of a Roman house and a temple dedicated to the god Mithras, dating back to the 3rd century AD. Following excavations and studies, the archaeological remains were curated, and the site has been open to the public since July 2013.
