Albacete mayor showcases sports and tourism potential at national boxing championships

The mayor of Albacete, Manuel Serrano, has emphasised the significance of hosting the 2026 National Boxing Championships for the Young and Junior categories, noting the event's potential to enhance the city's sports and tourism profile. The championships, which began on Tuesday and will conclude on Saturday, are being held at the Pabellón Universitario and have seen strong organisational success and participation.

Accompanied by the city’s sports councillor, Francisco Villaescusa, Serrano highlighted Albacete's capability to organise and host major sporting events. The championships feature 300 boxers from various regions of Spain, competing in over 300 matches, approximately 60 of which take place daily.

Serrano expressed pride in Albacete being the first city to host such a significant national competition, which is expected to have a positive impact on the local sports scene, economy, and tourism. He extended his gratitude to the Royal Spanish Boxing Federation, led by president Felipe Martínez, for their trust in Albacete to organise the championships, as well as to the University of Castilla-La Mancha for their support in facilitating the event at the Pabellón Universitario, with backing from the Municipal Sports Institute.

During the medal ceremony, Serrano congratulated all participants, particularly the winners, for their high level of performance and for helping to position the city as a national boxing hub during the event. It is worth noting that these championships serve as a preparatory event for the upcoming Olympic Games, featuring weight categories ranging from 50 to 90 kilograms for men and 45 to 80 kilograms for women.
