The town of Alcaraz is set to transform into a vibrant 16th-century scene during the third edition of 'Alcaraz Renacentista' on 17 and 18 October. This initiative, supported by the Albacete Provincial Council, aims to celebrate and promote the region's historical and cultural heritage.

Fran Valera, the Vice President of the Provincial Council, presented the event alongside Alcaraz's Mayor, Pedro Jesús Valero, the Deputy Mayor and provincial deputy for Agenda 2030, Yolanda Ballesteros, and María Luisa García, the secretary of the Alcaraz Renacentista Association. They were joined by reenactors representing the historical period.

Commemorating a historic event

This year's theme, 'Isabel of Portugal, 500th Anniversary of the Lady of Alcaraz', focuses on the significant moment when the Empress Isabel of Portugal, wife of Charles V, took possession of the lordship of Alcaraz. The event coincides with the 500th anniversary of this pivotal episode in local history, providing an opportunity to explore the political and social context of the time through various activities.

Valera emphasised the importance of such projects, stating that the province's historical heritage serves as a tool for future development. He noted that Alcaraz exemplifies how a community can leverage its history, culture, and identity to energise the region and extend its reach beyond local borders.

Local engagement and activities

Mayor Valero expressed gratitude to the Albacete Provincial Council for its ongoing support and acknowledged the year-round efforts of the Alcaraz Renacentista Association. He highlighted the significance of the event for the town, describing it as a chance to revisit the glorious Renaissance period of Alcaraz and to showcase its heritage.

María Luisa García described the event as a unique opportunity to learn about the transfer of power from the former lord to the new lady, Isabel of Portugal. The programme will feature live Renaissance music, traditional dances, popular games, communal meals, wine and oil tastings, and a bullfighting recreation. Additionally, performances of 'Coplas del Ciego' and 'Milagros de Cortes' will take place, alongside activities related to the trades and customs of the era.

García concluded by stating that the combination of the Renaissance setting in the picturesque Plaza Mayor, the costumes of the reenactors, and the overall decoration will create an immersive experience, transporting visitors back to the Renaissance period.
