Alexia Putellas, currently playing for London City Lionesses and a former star at FC Barcelona, has won her third Ballon d'Or, breaking the previous dominance of Aitana Bonmatí, who had claimed the award for the last three years.
Putellas, who missed out on last year's nominations due to a significant injury that sidelined her for most of the season, returned to form impressively, scoring twenty goals and providing fourteen assists during the year. Prior to her transfer to London City Lionesses, she achieved a domestic treble with Barcelona, winning the league, Copa de la Reina, and Supercopa, as well as the UEFA Champions League, where Barcelona triumphed over Olympique de Lyon in the final.
On the international stage, Putellas contributed to Spain's victory in the Nations League. Individually, she was named UEFA's Best Player in Europe, included in the Champions League's ideal eleven, and recognised as the best player in the Nations League.
This victory marks the sixth Ballon d'Or for Spain, which has established itself as the leading nation in the award's history. Since its inception in 2018, only four players have won the accolade: Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmatí, Ada Hegerberg, and Megan Rapinoe.
