Alicante invests €135,000 in fire station equipment upgrades

The Local Government Board of Alicante is set to approve a tender on Tuesday for a contract aimed at supplying furniture and specialised equipment for two fire stations operated by the Fire Prevention, Extinction and Rescue Service (SPEIS), with a budget of €129,863, including VAT. This investment will modernise the facilities at the Ildefonso Prats station, located in Playa de San Juan, and the Jesús González Soria station on Avenida de Jaime II.

Julio Calero, the councillor for security, explained that the upgrades will enhance the working, resting, and communal conditions for professionals who serve 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The contract includes renovations to various areas of both stations, focusing particularly on dormitories, common areas, kitchens, and spaces designated for emergency coordination and management.

One of the key improvements will be the enhancement of facilities for firefighters during their 24-hour shifts. This will involve the purchase of 40 new mattresses, upholstered bases, pillows, and bedside tables, along with additional furniture for the dormitories. The project will also introduce six three-seater sofas and six individual armchairs to refresh the communal areas.

Furthermore, new metal lockers and storage elements will be installed to enhance the organisation and functionality of the facilities. The kitchen equipment will also be upgraded, with new appliances and professional furniture being acquired. This includes refrigeration and freezing cabinets, convection ovens, industrial cookers, griddles, paella pans, stainless steel work tables, and various kitchen materials. Utensils, tableware, and cutlery will also be renewed to improve the usability of the facilities that are integral to the firefighters' daily routines.

The investment will also update the furniture in the administrative and operational areas of the stations. New emergency management tables, ergonomic chairs, cabinets, and office furniture will be included. Notably, three special chairs designed for 24-hour workstations and six electric height-adjustable tables will be acquired to improve ergonomics and adaptability in the workplace.

These enhancements will create more functional spaces that meet the needs of an emergency service that requires continuous operational activity. The renovation of the furniture and equipment reflects the necessity to maintain SPEIS facilities in suitable conditions for their operations. Given the unique organisation of the service, with 24-hour shifts, it is particularly important to have rest, dining, and work areas tailored to the professionals' needs.

The contract stipulates a maximum period of 60 days for the supply and installation of the equipment, starting from the formalisation of the contract, and includes transportation and setup of the furniture at both stations. Calero added, “With this investment, the City Council of Alicante continues to advance in improving the facilities and material resources of the Fire Prevention, Extinction and Rescue Service, reinforcing the conditions under which firefighters serve the public.”
