The Local Government Board has approved provisional birth grants for 497 families in Alicante, following a doubling of the allocated budget this year. Each grant amounts to 300 euros per birth, totalling 149,100 euros. This funding covers all eligible applications submitted in 2025 that had not yet been awarded.
Remaining funds from the 200,000 euro budget will be allocated to applications received in 2026, processed in the order they are received. Councillor for Social Welfare, Begoña León, stated, "All families with children born in 2026 will receive these grants, amounting to 300 euros for each birth." Applications that meet the requirements but are not funded in 2026 will be prioritised for 2027.
León highlighted that the purpose of these grants is to encourage birth rates in the municipality and to provide financial support to families in Alicante, describing it as a pioneering initiative that has been well received.
The grants are awarded strictly in the order of application, based on compliance with established regulatory criteria, which include the following:
- Applicants must be Spanish citizens or legally residing foreigners.
- Applicants must be over 18 years old or legally emancipated minors.
- Applicants must be registered in the city of Alicante, with at least one having resided there for four uninterrupted years.
- The newborn must be registered for the first time in the city of Alicante at the applicant's address.
- Applicants must hold a bank account.
- Applicants must be up to date with tax obligations to the Spanish Tax Agency and the City Council of Alicante, as well as with Social Security.
