In celebration of the Literary Awards of Alzira, cultural activities were organised leading up to the award ceremony. Among these was the 31st edition of the School Drawing Competition, themed 'A journey to the past: ancient Al-gezira'. This theme reflects the city’s rich history when it was inhabited by a Muslim population from the 9th to the 13th centuries.
During this period, Alzira, situated on the banks of the Júcar River, was surrounded by walls and featured narrow alleyways, baths, markets, and mosques, making it a culturally vibrant city. The arrival of King Jaume I on 30 December 1242 marked a significant transformation as the city began to adopt Christian influences under the Crown of Aragon.
The competition aimed to encourage students from Alzira to depict the ancient city, its inhabitants, and the coexistence of its two cultures. Through their artwork, participants paid tribute to King Jaume I, recognised as the founder of the Valencian people, and highlighted Alzira's historical significance.
This year, 1,524 children and young people from Alzira's educational centres participated, with 473 drawings submitted for selection by the Department of Education. An exhibition showcasing the 22 winning drawings was inaugurated at the MUMA, followed by the awards ceremony.
During the event, Virtuts Piera, the Councillor for Education and Childhood, expressed gratitude to students, teachers, and parents for their involvement in the organised activities and presented awards to the winners across various categories:
