Cidade da Cultura to host ‘Brutalismo. A dance for concert’ by Isabel do Diego

The Consellería de Cultura, Lingua e Xuventude has scheduled a performance of ‘Brutalismo. A dance for concert’ at the Cidade da Cultura on Saturday, 17 October. This live arts spectacle marks the culmination of seven years of research and experimentation by Andalusian artist Isabel do Diego, who merges traditional folklore with contemporary electronic sounds.

Initially conceived as an EP featuring six original tracks, ‘Brutalismo’ delves into the ancient practices of traditional music and dance, reinterpreting them for the 21st century by using the body as a complete instrument. The album was composed during the summer of 2025 at the Gaiás facilities and the Salón Teatro of the Centro Dramático Galego, as part of the Residencias Paraíso programme, which supports dance and live arts, created by the Colectivo RMP with the backing of the Xunta de Galicia.

During this residency, Isabel do Diego also designed four new musical devices for her live performance: pillars, beam, corva, and weather vane. Constructed from virgin wood and chrome steel, these innovative instruments are connected to software and respond to touch and air oscillations, translating movement into music.

In her live presentation, Isabel do Diego navigates the realms of the human, the animal, and the spiritual, accompanied by a mutating voice of electronic whispers. The performance of ‘Brutalismo’ is set for 17 October at 19:00 in Auditorium 1 of the CINC Building at the Cidade da Cultura. Tickets are available for €5 at the Museo Gaiás and on Ataquilla, with discounts for special groups.

Isabel do Diego, the alter ego of Andalusian artist Juan Diego Calzada, has spent recent years intensively exploring the origins and future of Andalusian folklore. With six albums to her name (including two full-length albums, two EPs, and a live concert recorded on vinyl), she has crafted a unique soundscape that blends traditional songs with fragmented sounds, beats, and synthesizers. Her approach to folklore is steeped in mystery and ritual, aiming to transcend the boundaries of melody and the corporeal.
