Consell de Mallorca enhances training for museum professionals

Sixteen professionals from museums and cultural facilities have taken part in a SketchUp course organised at the Cultural Centre La Misericòrdia. This initiative by the Consell de Mallorca aims to provide digital tools for the management, planning, and design of exhibition spaces.

The course, held throughout October, focused on SketchUp, a three-dimensional design and modelling application that enables the creation of virtual representations of spaces and structures. This training is part of the Consell de Mallorca's commitment to fostering continuous education for professionals involved in the conservation, management, and promotion of Mallorca's cultural heritage.

Antònia Roca, the Vice President of the Consell de Mallorca and Councillor for Culture and Heritage, emphasised the importance of training for museum professionals in ensuring innovative cultural management that meets the new challenges of the sector. She stated, “Training for museum professionals is essential to guarantee innovative cultural management adapted to the new challenges in the sector.”

Roca also highlighted that “tools like SketchUp allow for more precise planning of exhibition spaces, improve workflows, and provide higher quality experiences for visitors.” She assured that the Consell de Mallorca will continue to promote training initiatives that encourage knowledge exchange and professionalisation within the island's museum sector, stressing that the conservation and dissemination of heritage require increasingly skilled professionals connected with new technologies.

The course took place on the 8th, 15th, and 22nd of October and was highly practical, equipping participants with the necessary skills to design and plan exhibition spaces. With this tool, professionals can create virtual assembly proposals, arrange artworks within galleries, and explore different organisational options before realising an exhibition.

Participants included professionals from various cultural institutions and entities in Mallorca, such as the Town Hall of Inca, the Museum of Sacred Art, the Museum of Mallorca, the Archaeological Park of Puig de sa Morisca, UIB-CSIC, the Museographic Collection of the Cosme Bauçà Foundation, and the Botanical Garden-Natural Sciences Museum, as well as staff from the Culture Service of the Consell de Mallorca and other departments within the Department of Culture and Heritage.
