Girona's business turnover surpasses €37 billion for the first time

The turnover of companies in the Girona region has reached a record €37.039 billion, marking a 1.9% increase from the previous year’s €36.343 billion. This milestone was reported in the seventh edition of the 'Estructura empresarial de la demarcación de Girona' study, published by the Diputació de Girona.

The study, which reflects data from 2024, indicates that the Gironès, Selva, and Alt Empordà regions account for 70% of the total turnover. The report highlights the resilience of Girona's business landscape, which has shown consistent growth over recent years.

Key findings of the study

This year’s study reveals that the number of registered companies in the region has increased by 2.2%, reaching a total of 14,719. Additionally, the number of employees reported by these companies has risen by 2.7%, totalling 177,095 individuals.

Looking ahead, the study forecasts that the turnover for 2025 could reach €38.819 billion, representing a further 4.8% increase. The food and beverage sector remains the highest-grossing, accounting for 19.9% of total turnover, followed by wholesale food and beverage trade at 9.4% and commercial intermediaries at 5.8%.

Business demographics

Notably, 73.5% of the analysed companies report a turnover of less than €1 million. In contrast, the top 250 companies, which represent just 1.7% of the total, contribute to 55.7% of overall sales. There are currently seven companies in the Girona region that each exceed an annual turnover of €400 million.

The study also highlights a trend towards younger businesses, with 66.7% established after 2000 and 29% since 2015. Only 173 companies, or 1.2%, were founded before 1970.

Regional turnover distribution

In terms of regional distribution, the Gironès, Selva, and Alt Empordà regions collectively generated €25.896 billion, accounting for 70% of the total turnover. However, the most significant growth was observed in Cerdanya, which saw a 7% increase, and Garrotxa, which experienced a 5.2% rise.

Per capita turnover across the Girona region has slightly decreased from €44,696 in 2023 to €44,393 in 2024. The Pla de l'Estany remains the region with the highest per capita turnover at €84,550, followed by Garrotxa (€62,449), Selva (€51,179), and Gironès (€49,217). Cerdanya reported the lowest per capita turnover at €15,268, despite a notable increase of 5.6% during 2024.

The 'Estructura empresarial de la demarcación de Girona 2026' study follows a model initiated by the Manresa City Council, which has been a pioneer in Catalonia for similar regional analyses. The aim of the study is to provide local economic agents with a precise structural framework regarding the types of businesses in the region and the relationships between different sectors.
