Hemisphere Producciones is currently staging 'Maruja, killer of mosquitoes, rats, torturers and executioners' at the Teatro de la Laboral, with performances running until 4 November. This production is part of the Residency Programme of the Scenic Resources Centre of the Principality, located in the Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura, a cultural complex in Gijón, Asturias.
Written by Miguel Palacios, the play is a tragicomedy infused with elements of black humour and grotesque realism, focusing on the life of a housewife trapped in an oppressive existence. The protagonist, Maruja, portrayed by Laura Piquero, is a woman who has sacrificed her identity for her family and societal expectations. Overwhelmed by her husband, children, mother-in-law, father, and domestic obligations, she eventually reaches a breaking point and decides to take control of her life.
Directed by Roberto Corte, 'Maruja' addresses themes of anxiety, everyday violence, and female liberation. The technical direction is handled by Rafael Echeverz, with Rebecca Arrose serving as producer and Emilio Ruiz Borrachina as executive producer.
Hemisphere has a strong track record in film production and has co-produced musical performances. The company currently has five theatrical productions touring Spain, including 'La Comedia sin Título', which enjoyed a successful run in Madrid in September 2025; 'Magia de GK Chesterton', which has seen over 40 performances; 'Le ordena a usted que me quiera' and 'Survival', both premiered at the Teatro Palacio Valdés in Avilés; and 'La Pasión según Félix Grande', performed in April at the Teatro Campoamor.
The Scenic Resources Centre of the Principality is a project based in the Ciudad de la Cultura that supports the artistic creation of professional Asturian companies, providing them with financial resources, facilities, and technical means to enhance the scenic creation of local professionals.
