The Centro Cultural MIRA in Pozuelo de Alarcón is hosting the exhibition 'Henri Matisse. Obra gráfica', dedicated to one of the most significant figures in 20th-century art. The exhibition invites visitors to explore Matisse's creative universe through a selection of works primarily consisting of illustrated books.
Opening tomorrow and running until 29 November, the exhibition traces Matisse's (1869–1954) graphic production from the years before World War II to the end of his life, a period during which he found solace in illustration and a means to assert beauty in the face of adversity. With over a hundred lithographs on display, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to discover Matisse's role as an illustrator and his approach to spirituality.
Among the featured works are 'Les Lettres portugaises' and his illustrations for the poems of Charles d'Orléans. The exhibition also highlights his collaboration with publisher and patron Tériade, particularly focusing on the covers and lithographs created for the magazine 'Verve'. The journey through the exhibition concludes with the 'Chapel of the Rosary' in Vence, which Matisse regarded as the culmination of his artistic career. This project is presented through a series of original photographs by Hélène Adant, providing insight into the comprehensive conception of one of his most important creations.
'Henri Matisse. Obra gráfica' will be open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 11:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00. A guided tour led by the exhibition coordinator, Vega Bautista, is scheduled for 12 November at 19:00. Admission is free until capacity is reached.
