The deputy mayor of Madrid and delegate for Security and Emergencies, Inma Sanz, alongside the councillor for the city centre, Carlos Segura, presented the book 'Historia de la Policía Municipal de Madrid' this morning. This extensive 271-page work offers a documentary and photographic journey through the history of the municipal police force from its establishment to the present day, authored by the officers themselves.
“As deputy mayor of Madrid and responsible for security and emergency services for the past seven years, I feel a deep pride in presenting this book,” Sanz stated, describing the publication as “an extraordinary work” that highlights the fundamental role the municipal police have historically played in ensuring the safety and security of both residents and visitors.
Sanz emphasised that “opening this book is akin to peering into the history of our city,” noting that the police force is “inseparable from the streets it patrols and the people it serves.” The book is structured into six chapters and seven appendices, featuring introductions by the city’s mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, and Sanz herself. It reflects the social, urban, and cultural changes that have transformed the capital over the centuries, illustrating how the municipal police have adapted to these changes while maintaining essential values of proximity, professionalism, and public service.
“The evolution and responsiveness of the force have paralleled the transformation of Madrid,” Sanz highlighted, adding that documenting its history allows for a record of what Madrid has been, what it is, and the journey it has taken to become what it is today. For the deputy mayor, the book narrates “the story of how a vibrant and energetic city is capable of ensuring coexistence in its neighbourhoods,” thanks to the dedication of the men and women who “are always there when needed.”
