Inspai, the Image Centre of the Diputació de Girona, has kicked off the fifth edition of its conference series 'Triangular: woman, narration and memory in documentary photography', which began on 5 November to a warm reception. This series aims to explore and highlight the contributions of professional female photographers to contemporary photography.
After five successful editions, the series has established itself as a key component of Inspai's cultural and educational programming, helping to raise the visibility of female perspectives and acknowledge the role of women in shaping the visual narratives of our time. Over the years, this initiative has become a space for dialogue between professionals and photography enthusiasts, allowing for the sharing of experiences, creative processes, and new ways of understanding photographic language.
The opening session featured photographer and visual artist Montse Capel, who presented 'Mynameismoon: twenty years of self-portraiture', offering a retrospective of two decades of photographic creation. Through her personal and artistic journey, Capel addressed themes such as identity, memory, self-representation, and the passage of time.
This year’s programme, organised by Inspai and coordinated by Diego Espada, includes four professionals connected to documentary photography, research, photojournalism, and contemporary artistic creation. All four presentations share a common thread: photography as a tool for reclaiming memory, giving voice to the silenced, and making visible realities often overlooked by official narratives. From diverse perspectives and disciplines, the speakers invite reflection on the power of images to explain, preserve, and challenge the world around us.
Upcoming conferences in November
Following the positive reception of the first session, the series will continue with three additional conferences:
- 12 November: Clara Garriga Andreu will discuss 'To violate a body, one must strip it of itself', reflecting on the invisibilised care, women's memory, and gender violence through photography and manual intervention on images.
- 19 November: Lourdes Delgado will present 'Margaret Bourke-White and the Civil War: unpublished photographs of Barcelona', sharing findings from a five-year investigation into the photographs taken by the renowned American photojournalist in Barcelona in 1938, which were never published.
- 26 November: Espe Pons will explore 'The non-visible, the silenced', addressing historical and collective memory through themes such as exile, mass graves, and women's memory, while sharing the role of photography, archives, and photobooks in her creative process.
All conferences will take place at 19:00 in INSPAI (Room B of the Casa de Cultura de Girona). Attendance is free, but prior registration is required due to limited seating.
