The Pirineu region in Lleida has been recognised as the best natural destination in Spain in the fourth edition of the Viajes National Geographic Reader Awards. This accolade, determined by popular vote, highlights the area's scenic beauty, rich natural heritage, and commitment to sustainable and high-quality tourism.
Results of the voting were announced on Tuesday, showcasing the valleys, forests, peaks, and lakes of the Pirineu as some of the best-preserved natural spaces in Europe. The publication noted that the region offers an ideal setting for outdoor activities year-round.
Juan Antonio Serrano, vice president of the Lleida Tourism Board, stated that this recognition “consolidates the leadership of the Pirineu as a reference for nature tourism.” He emphasised that the award is a result of the collective efforts of the entire tourism sector, which has focused on sustainability, quality, and authenticity as strategic pillars.
Serrano highlighted that the Pirineu region boasts natural treasures such as the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, as well as the Alt Pirineu and Cadí-Moixeró parks. He also mentioned ecotourism initiatives, including forest bathing, birdwatching experiences, and deer rutting events.
He added that these nature activities are complemented by a wide range of cultural and gastronomic offerings that enrich the tourist experience. Juli Alegre, director of the Lleida Tourism Board, remarked that the award “encourages us to continue working in the same direction, promoting a responsible tourism model that attracts conscious tourists who value our natural spaces, culture, and people.”
Alegre noted that the recognition from readers is particularly valuable as it reflects the real experiences of visitors and strengthens their promotional strategy.
