Last week, the Madrid Investment Forum was held in Toronto, coinciding with a visit from the European Union to Canada, featuring participation from Ursula von der Leyen. This event marked a significant moment for reinforcing economic and commercial ties between Europe and Canada.
The Community of Madrid aims to play an active role in this strategic relationship, establishing itself as the primary gateway for Canadian companies seeking to expand in Europe. Current statistics reveal that Canada ranks as the 12th largest investor in Spain and the 10th in the Community of Madrid. The total stock of Canadian investment in Spain reaches €13.57 billion, with €10.92 billion (80.5%) concentrated in the Community of Madrid, underscoring the region's importance as the main destination for Canadian investment.
In terms of employment, Canadian capital companies generate 29,377 jobs in Spain, with 7,546 (25.7%) located in the Community of Madrid. During the forum, the competitive advantages that make the region an attractive destination for international investment were highlighted. Notable contributions came from Randy Boissonnault, former Canadian Minister, and institutional representatives who emphasised the strength of relations between Canada and Spain, as well as the potential for further investments and collaboration opportunities between the two markets.
One of the most inspiring moments of the day was the success story of OpenText, a Canadian company with over two decades of presence in Madrid. Their experience, supported by an investment exceeding €11 million and a history of sustained growth from the region, illustrates how Madrid provides a stable, competitive environment with access to top talent for developing global projects.
With over 60 attendees, the event facilitated 10 meetings with potential investors. Special thanks were extended to DLA Piper for hosting the forum in their Toronto facilities and to CaixaBank for collaborating in providing services and tools that assist Canadian companies in establishing and growing in Spain.
As Europe and Canada strengthen their economic and strategic ties, Invest in Madrid continues to work towards creating opportunities, generating valuable connections, and supporting international companies that choose Madrid for their establishment, contributing to the city's status as one of the leading hubs for investment, innovation, and talent in Europe.
